I won some free business cards. First time designing these kinda things. Like how it turned out.
western feminists need to stop telling muslim women they are oppressed if they don’t FEEL oppressed. if they feel liberated by their religion then LEAVE THEM BE.
female empowerment is completely subjective and if you are a woman it’s 100% up to you to decide how you feel liberated or empowered and you can’t force that upon anyone else.
So it’s not right to push for voting, education and economic rights for women worldwide, since some of them don’t FEEL oppressed? What if they simply don’t know any better?
Islam is “liberating” for women in the same way that Christianity is “liberating” for gays.
I think this post was written more as a reaction toward FEMEN and their ilk denouncing the hijab/burqua/other parts of Islam these women voluntarily choose to adopt as oppressive and unfeminist, it does not imply that it is not right to push for voting, education and economic rights.
the point was that personal practice of religion and religion itself is not the oppressor, it is as possible to be a Muslim feminist as it is a gay Christian.
From what I’ve gathered, FEMEN has popped up as a reaction to rampant misogyny in some European cultures. Protests against Islamism and co. have been side effects. Keep in mind however that these people are on the “front lines”. They only need look a few hundred miles to the east in Russia to the Chechnyans to see an example of medieval, backwards cultures and practices.
Further, people migrating to these countries (Ukraine and France) come from cultures that we would view as less then exemplar when it comes to women’s rights. How do you know when someone is wearing their garments out of societal pressure or through personal choice? I would say that, yes, while it is ideally your choice in whether to wear them or not, they are tools of oppression and segregation.
Being a gay Christian or feminist Muslim requires a whole lot of compartmentalization of your ideals. Religion itself doesn’t oppress anyone, just like a gun doesn’t kill anyone by itself. However it makes the oppressing that much easier.

The problem is that ever since 9/11 the western discourse on Islam and coverings has been shaped and dominated by what the Taliban was doing in Afghanistan. People think all Muslim women have been forced into wearing coverings when in fact many women choose to do it. If you want to wear a hijab or a niqab, that’s up to you. No woman in my immediate family has ever worn one and I have extended relatives whose children have chosen to wear it even though the mother doesn’t. Just because you don’t agree with something or understand something about another faith doesn’t mean it’s a horrible oppressive tool. As long as you aren’t hurting others, what’s the big fucking deal?
While it’s true that Westerners often have a mistaken view of the role of women in Islamic society, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some serious, serious issues. What makes this whole thing rich is that enforcement of strict gender roles in these societies is from women speaking out against other women. Ever since the forces keeping negative elements at bay toppled, rape and sexual assault in Egypt has skyrocketed. Feminists have tried to hold rallies in solidarity; guess who mobbed them the most.
Wearing religious head coverings (hijab, chador etc) is a choice, but in no way is it liberation. The act itself is one of submission, in this case to god. By doing so you are cheapening yourself. It is a sign of strict conformation in a society that is very masculine-dominant in the public sphere.
How dare those evil Western imperialists try to impart ideas like fair treatment between the sexes, banning FGM and promoting education for girls!
Sometimes I do these silly little pieces. I like alternate history a lot.
